When it comes to resumes, most job seekers are unaware of common mistakes and unintentional red flags that can ruin their chances of landing interviews. In an ultra-competitive job market where every job posting receives hundreds of applicants, it has become extremely difficult to stand out. Even with the help of AI wordsmithing, it's still a challenge for job seekers to deliver their unique value proposition in a way that consistently lands interviews. Unfortunately, AI is only making the job search worse. AI auto apply platforms are bombarding applicant tracking systems with exponentially more resumes. At the same time, emerging AI features in applicant tracking systems are determining relevancy scores so that HR & hiring managers can focus on candidates with perfect resumes. Many companies are still using legacy applicant tracking systems without AI capabilities leaving HR screeners dependent on the ATS grid view. Job seekers are often surprised to hear that 70-80% of resumes are rejected in the grid view of applicant tracking systems without being reviewed. Grid view screens are dependent on the accuracy of parsing technologies, of which even the best are routinely inaccurate. Using the proper resume format is key to ensure accurate parsing and ATS grid view optimization. The remaining 20-30% of resumes are reviewed, but typically by a busy HR person with overly critical eyes and limited time before their next meeting. Each resume is only reviewed for 3-5 seconds before a decision is made to pursue or reject. You have to ensure the reviewer can quickly find relevant experience from your background, key items that match their job requirements, and not be scared away by common mistakes or red flags. It is now more important than ever to understand what those are and how to optimize your resume and LinkedIn profile. You also need to know how to leverage LinkedIn to your advantage. If not, you risk finding yourself stuck in the resume black hole for months on end with no income and a growing pile of debt.
